Data sovereignty

Keeping your data in New Zealand.

Most clients ask us the same thing before they move anything to the cloud: where will our data actually be? With CloudSource the answer is short. It’s in our own data centre in Auckland, and we look after it.

FAQ

Questions we get asked about data sovereignty

What does data sovereignty mean?

Your data is subject to the laws of the country it’s stored in. If your files sit on servers in New Zealand, New Zealand law applies. If they sit in Sydney or the US, other countries’ laws can apply too.

Where does CloudSource keep our data?

In our data centre in Auckland, which we’ve run since 2014. It has backup generators, dual air-conditioning, multi-factor sign-in and 24/7 monitoring. Your backups stay here too. If you’d like to see it, we’ll show you round. More on our private cloud.

Does the Privacy Act say our data has to stay in New Zealand?

No. The Privacy Act 2020 doesn’t require you to store data onshore. It does make you responsible for the personal information you hold, wherever it’s kept, and it limits sending personal information overseas. Some clients, funders and contracts go further and ask for data to stay in New Zealand. If yours do, we can show exactly where everything is.

Doesn’t Azure have a New Zealand region now?

Yes. Microsoft has a New Zealand North Azure region, and it’s a good fit for some systems. Not every Azure service is offered there, though, so check where each service and its backups actually run. We can do that check for you. See our Azure services.

Which systems should we keep onshore?

Usually anything holding client files, financial records or personal information: file servers, practice management and accounting systems, and their backups. Less sensitive systems can often go wherever they’re cheapest to run. We’ll go through what you have and give you a straight answer.

Can we use both private cloud and Azure?

Yes. Plenty of our clients keep their core systems and files in our Auckland data centre and run other things in Azure. One team looks after both.

Not sure where your data is now?

Tell us what you’re running. We’ll tell you where it lives today and what we’d keep onshore.
